The 85281 area is the northern area of Tempe, AZ. Tempe is east of Phoenix, AZ. The 60 freeways runs East and West through Tempe while the 101 freeway runs North and South through the city. The 60 freeway is south of the 85281 area and the 101 is east of the city. Both freeways are easily accessible and lead you all across the East Valley and into Scottsdale.
North Tempe is filled with older homes full of character that were built almost a hundred years ago.
Tempe, AZ has many options for all levels of education. The 85281 area offers many schools options available from K-12. The main high school that serves the 85281 area is Tempe High School. There are private and charter schools scattered all around the area and in neighboring cities as well.
Arizona State University is located right in the 85281 area of Tempe, AZ. Rio Salado College also serves the community college students for Tempe. Some of the other community colleges nearby are Mesa Community College and South Mountain Community College.
Things to Do
In the northern part of the 85281 community in Tempe is the Tempe Town Lake and Beach Park where you are sure to find something fun to do. Tempe Beach Park has a lake that is two miles long. The lake allows visitors to use boats, kayaks, and paddleboards on the water. There is even a small marina against the water for the serious enthusiasts. There is a path system all around the lake for jogging, biking, or taking a stroll. The park holds many events all year round including the July 4th celebrations for the city.
For movie fans, Tempe has an original IMAX theater located at the Arizona Mills Mall. Arizona Mills Mall also offers LegoLand and SeaLife for younger kids to enjoy!
If you are looking for a fun physical challenge, check out “A” mountain, located just east of Mill Ave. The mountain is more of a hill at first sight but once you start the high-incline trail, it will quickly start to feel like one! The panoramic views from the top give hikers a nice glance of downtown Tempe, ASU, and Tempe Town Lake.
Fun Fact: Before it was called Tempe, this area of Arizona was known as Hayden’s Ferry.
