Well it’s here. The start of summer fun! Memorial Day has been known for many years as the kick off to all the summer activities. People turn this into a BBQ’ing fun in the sun day in many ways from spending time around the pool to being on the ocean beach. It’s time to uncover those grills, and pull out your smokers, and get ready for the Best summer kick off EVER!
One of my favorite Memorial Day Celebrations as a child was our family Memorial Day Bash. This is a huge camping get together, with friends and family. We would pack our coolers; load up the toys (quads, razors, jeeps etc…) and head up to Flagstaff for some cooler shady weather. Some of us would have RV’s and fifth wheels, while some of us enjoyed the OLD SCHOOL way of camping, with tents and sleeping bags. Either way it was a great time, just hanging out by the campfire making s’mores enjoying some good music. Camping is definitely one great way to Celebrate Memorial Day. It’s a way to really enjoy nature with people you enjoy around as well.
Another really fun and exciting way to celebrate your extended weekend could be gathering your closest pals for some lake action. Gas up your boat and head down to the local lake. Living on the West side of the valley, you have Lake Pleasant where they are equipped with two marinas with full restaurants, live music, and tons of people ready to get the party going. Living on the East side of town, you have the beautiful Saguaro Lake. Not to mention all the other lakes in between. If you’re looking for a real treat and some excitement, you can take the 3 hours trip to the Famous Lake Havasu where there is endless excitement!
Here in Arizona we have another very traditional fun in the sun excursion. Arizona has its famous Salt River running through it. Many, many years ago someone came up with the very exciting idea of tubing down that Salt River. It’s a fun 4 hour trip in a tube relaxing while the river carries you downstream. Once again, pack up your cooler and sunscreen, gather some friends and head on down to the Salt River Tubing. While you’re there taking a look around more than likely you will see lots of wild life along with the beautiful desert landscaping.
My personal favorite Memorial Day celebration is taking a weekend trip to the ocean. Even though Arizona itself does not have a beach, it’s a very short drive to get to the Pacific Ocean. You can take a 5 hour beautiful scenic drive to San Diego, California, where they have endless beach fun. Or you can get creative and head over the border where you have the very famous Rocky Point, Mexico. There, you can enjoy amazing fresh seafood, and some fun water activities. In my opinion you can never go wrong when you’re on the beach!
Last but definitely not least, you could always have a good old fashion pool party! Invite everyone you know to come over for some pool side fun. Get your grills going, make some potato salad, chips and salsa, and of course the pool toys! There is nothing like playing games in the cool refreshing water while you smell the hamburgers on the grill.
Now that ASU is out for the summer you have lots of students venturing home for their 3 month break. For those of you who are heading back East, consider hitting up some festivals. They have great music, food and shopping. One of my personal favorites when I lived in New York was the Lilac Festival. This usually goes until the middle of May, and it is a nice start to your summer fun.
Remember, safety is most important, so drink lots and lots of water, wear sunscreen and be responsible!
With all those great ideas for some Memorial Day fun, the most important thing is to remember is our fallen soldiers! They hold a special spot in our hearts, their sacrifice for our freedom is priceless! Remember we can enjoy all these great activities because of their service.
