Discover Affordable Living, History and Nature in Spring Valley

Spring Valley is a large unincorporated community in eastern San Diego County, about 30 minutes from downtown San Diego. Spring Valley is nestled between El Cajon and La Presa; it also shares a border with the San Diego Wildlife Refuge. If you’re seeking a quiet, residential area, replete with sunshine and natural beauty, this area is an ideal place to live or do business.

The Kumeyaay people were the first to inhabit what is now known as Spring Valley. They existed here for thousands of years, with fresh water from the natural spring the community is named for and plenty of resources in the surrounding woodlands and nearby coast. Eventually, Spanish conquerors pushed the indigenous people out of their ancestral land and used the area for cattle ranching.

The modern Spring Valley community was founded in 1863 when Judge Augustus S. Ensworth built a two-room home on a 160-acre plot of land. The home was constructed with wood salvaged from a ship that had run aground in the San Diego Harbor. Still standing, it’s now a National Historic Landmark. Historian Hubert Bancroft eventually purchased the property and transformed it into one of Southern California’s largest olive farms at the time.

Spring Valley is now a peaceful residential area with close-knit communities, safe neighborhoods and a bustling local economy. Most residents own their homes, and local schoolchildren attend one of the 26 public schools in the area, many of which are rated above average. Many locals spend their free time in the great outdoors — numerous trails wind through Spring Valley’s hills for walking, hiking and horseback riding.

Things to Do in Spring Valley, CA

Start your Spring Valley journey with a visit to the Hubert H. Bancroft Ranch House, which was constructed in the mid-1800s well before this Southern California community was on the map. Its owner between 1885 and 1918 was Hubert H. Bancroft, a well-known historian of the western United States and Central America. He is best known for his enormous 39-volume history covering western North America from Alaska to Mexico. He also had an impressive library containing 60,000 pieces, which is now kept at the University of California, Berkeley.

Another place to discover the region’s long history (and how it influences the present) is at the Heritage of the Americas Museum in nearby El Cajon. Located near Cuyamaca College, the museum features thousands of artifacts telling the stories of both the natural history and people’s history of Southern California, Central America and other places around the world. See fossilized creatures, pre-Columbian artifacts and even a collection of Chinese artworks. Among the most impressive displays is a 2,000-year-old jade burial suit from the Han Dynasty.

Ready to get outside and move? You’re in luck — the Otay Mountain Wilderness is a mere 25 minutes from our facility in Spring Valley. Stretching across more than 17,000 acres, the area is home to many endangered species. All 37 plant species found on Otay Mountain are listed as “sensitive.” Further, the Tecate cypress is found only on Otay Mountain or in the immediate surrounding area. Although you’re sure to see plenty of mule deer in the area, you may also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a rare bighorn sheep or a colorful Quino checkerspot butterfly.

Spring Valley is less than an hour from Tijuana. So, naturally, there’s an abundance of Mexican and Central American eateries to try. At the top of the list is Ranas, a mom-and-pop cocina serving up classic Mexico City-style dishes, ranging from carnitas to emtomatado (roasted pork and grilled cactus topped with spicy tomatillo and chile de arbol salsa). You also can’t go wrong with the El Puerto Taco Shop, a favorite for straightforward, classic tacos.
