Known for rosebush-lined streets and breathtaking views of the San Bernardino mountains, Redlands is one of the most popular cities in southern California’s Inland Empire.
In the late 19th century, the Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroads fueled Redlands’ exponential growth. Citrus agriculture increased the area’s popularity, attracting businesses and families from across the nation with mild weather and a booming economy. At one point, the city exported the most navel oranges in the world. You can find many historical structures in Redlands, including the Redlands Central Railway Company Car Barn and the Barton School House. Built in 1877, the Barton School House is the oldest structure in Redlands.
Today, the city is revered for its schools, including University of Redlands and the highly rated Redlands Unified School District. First established in 1909, University of Redlands offers undergraduate liberal arts degrees as well as several graduate programs.
Esri, a global supplier of geographic information system software, is the top employer in Redlands. Other prominent employers include the Redlands Community Hospital and the Loma Linda University Behavioral Medical Center. Most Redlands residents work in office and administrative support, educational instruction and sales.

History buffs will be right at home in Redlands with numerous beautifully preserved Victorian-era homes, including Kimberly Crest House and Gardens and the purportedly haunted Morey Mansion. Kimberly Crest House and Gardens is a château-style estate, constructed in 1897 for Mrs. Cornelia Hill, one of Redlands’ original founders. The impressive 7,000-square-foot structure includes several rooms including a powder room, a main hall, a billiard room and a sleeping porch. Equally breathtaking, the Italian Renaissance-inspired gardens feature a wisteria arbor, a koi pond and an 80-foot-tall magnolia tree. The estate and gardens are open to guided tours.
Redlands is dotted with several museums, including the Redlands Historical Museum, which depicts Redlands’ rise to a navel-orange-producing powerhouse with an array of newspaper clippings, books, photos, maps and more. Another interesting destination is the Lincoln Shrine, the only memorial west of the Mississippi River honoring the nation’s sixteenth president. The octagonally shaped shrine is decorated with limestone plates engraved with excerpts from Lincoln’s speeches.
Another place to visit is the Redlands Bowl, an enormous amphitheater known for hosting the country’s longest continuously running, free summer music festival. Since 1924, the Redlands Bowl hosts live music and throngs of concertgoers during every summertime Tuesday and Friday evening. It’s an essential outing for the whole family.
