San Diego Attracts Families, Students, Service Members and Businesses

Sometimes referred to as the “birthplace of California,” San Diego was founded in 1769 (and admitted to the Union in 1850). It was the first place Europeans visited on the West Coast of what would become the United States, but the Kumeyaay people have inhabited the region for thousands of years. Today, it is a future-focused city and a hub for trade, travel and tourism. Major landmarks include Balboa Park, the 11,179-foot Coronado Bridge and San Diego International Airport, which is the busiest single-runway airport in the nation.

San Diego has long been a desirable place to live, with pleasant weather year round. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, San Diego has one of the top 10 best climates in the U.S. Another reason the city has remained popular through the years is its fertile soil. There are more than 7,000 farms in the area and San Diego is the No. 1 producer of avocados in the country.

Top industries in San Diego include military and defense, tourism, international trade and manufacturing. Prominent employers include the U.S. Navy, University of California San Diego (UCSD), Sharp HealthCare and the San Diego Unified School District. In fact, 69 Navy ships (a sixth of the Navy’s entire fleet!) and 90,000 Navy personnel call San Diego home. Many of these servicemembers work at nearby Camp Pendleton or on bases at San Diego, Coronado or Point Loma.

Another way San Diego stands out is its incredible biodiversity. The city has one of the highest counts of endangered species in the U.S., including many birds who migrate along the Pacific Flyway as well as the rare Torrey Pine. You can discover this endemic and critically endangered tree at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve — a half-hour drive from our facility. We’re also near the Mission Trails Regional Park, another great location to experience San Diego’s beautiful natural scenery.

Things to Do in San Diego

There is certainly no shortage of activities to fill the sunny days in San Diego. Balboa Park alone includes enough family-friendly attractions to fill 24 hours, if not more. Sprawling across 25 acres, the park contains 16 museums, multiple performing arts venues, gardens, trails and the San Diego Zoo, home to the first baby panda born in the Western Hemisphere.

Overwhelmed by the sheer number of things to see here? Here are a few recommendations:

  • Botanical Building and Lily Pond – Stop to sniff the flowers at the Botanical Building. It’s one of the only indoor botanical gardens without a glass ceiling — instead, it’s known for a massive wood lath covering (narrow slats of wood that allow the sun through).
  • Museum of Us – This anthropological museum is housed in the ornate California Building, which was built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition. Explore several exhibits on topics including the Ancient Maya, a history of beer making and cannibalism.
  • San Diego Junior Theater – Find the oldest, continuing children’s theater at the San Diego Junior Theater. The program has run since 1948, producing stars Dennis Hopper and Raquel Welch. Seeing a show here is a memorable experience for all ages.

Other popular activities in the area include a day trip to Coronado Island (a drive across the iconic Coronado Bridge), which is known for its beachy, laid-back ambiance, a charming main street and the famous Hotel del Coronado. Built in 1888, the hotel is one of the few remaining examples of the American Victorian resort architectural style and became a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It has hosted celebrities, presidents and royalty through the years, as well as a resident ghost — Kate Morgan, an 1892 visitor, is said to haunt the halls.

On the San Diego side of the Coronado Bridge is the Embarcadero, the city’s scenic and walkable harbor-front. Grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or a souvenir at the shops lining the water. The Embarcadero is a testament to San Diego’s rich maritime history, with several historic ships on display as well as museums and harbor tours. Don’t miss the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship, which has completed 21 circumnavigations. For an extra-special excursion, go for a harbor dining cruise to watch the sunset and see the city light up the night sky.

San Diego is also known as America’s Craft Beer capital — there are more than 150 operational breweries in the city. There’s no better way to finish up a day exploring San Diego’s many attractions than with an ice-cold brew and a Cali-style burrito: a flour tortilla stuffed with carne asada, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese and a generous helping of French fries. Yum!

During a very difficult move, we had just gotten a truckload of stuff unloaded and in the process of moving it to a 2nd floor unit, the elevator went down. It was getting dark and Michael wasn't able to get the elevator working again, and all the stuff was sitting out there and we had no idea of what to do. we were broke, tired, and frustrated and when it seemed completely hopless, Michael and Lisa came thru by moving us to a bottom floor storage unit that was big enough to put all the stuff into, along with moving my stuff from upstairs to downstairs. They took what had become a very frustrating and hopeless situation and provided a solution that worked all around. I would whole heartedly recommend Storage West on Princess View, Michael and Lisa are wonderful people who have a job to do but never lose that quality which makes them a joy to work with!
