Phoenix StorageThe latest statistics indicate that nearly 1 out 10 American households currently rent a self-storage unit.  While that might explain the fact that there are currently over 2 billion square feet of self-storage space in the United States, it doesn’t tell you why so many people take advantage of their local storage facility. We’ve found that while there are any number of motivations for renting a storage unit, most people in Phoenix give one of these ten reasons.

10. You Inherit an Estate

When a family member dies and you’re left with the estate, you probably want to hold on to heirlooms, memorabilia, and other meaningful items. Whether you’re keeping these things forever or just while you sort through them, a storage unit is a good place to preserve your family history.

9. You are Selling Your Home

If you’re getting ready to sell your home, you’ll want to remove all the excess items so that you can show the place to prospective buyers. A neighborhood storage unit is the solution that professional home stagers use, and you can take advantage of it too.

8. Your Club or Organization has Stuff

Not all storage units are rented for personal use. A variety of organizations and clubs accumulate stuff.  Kids’ sports teams have equipment and uniforms. Hobby groups have finished projects or materials for the next endeavor.  Sometimes it’s as simple as your club having an inventory of items they are selling to raise money.  It’s probably a good idea to designate some of the funds to renting a storage space rather than stashing it in someone’s garage.

7. Your Event has Stuff

Conventions, fairs, festivals, etc. are another time when organizations and clubs need stuff, but only once or twice a year.  The rest of the time they need a place to stash all that signage, decorations, and other materials until the next scheduled event.  It’s usually better to get a storage unit rather than make one individual responsible for keeping the stuff safe.

6. You are Experiencing a Major Life Change

Many of our customers report going through a major life change.  They may be getting divorced, relocating, or retiring. Each of these situations means that they need time to figure out what’s next.  Putting their belongings in storage while they sort out their living situation is fairly common.

5. You have Seasonal Items

You may be an avid gardener or an expert skier. In either case, you have equipment that you only use for part of the year.  The rest of the year you need a place to store it all.  You could shove it in the back of a closet or a corner of the garage, or you could rent a storage unit and keep things neat and organized until the next season rolls around.

4. You Rent Your House as a Vacation Home

Many people in Phoenix live in Arizona for part of the year and rent their homes out the other months. During prime vacation season, you’ll want to protect your personal items by placing them in secure storage.

3. Your Small Business has Stuff

As more and more people go into business for themselves, they are accumulating inventory and other business-related equipment or simply need a place to store company files.  Renting a storage unit might be a good idea for your business.

2. You are Downsizing

Whether you’re moving to a smaller home or have relocated from a part of the country where basements and attics are common, you may not have room in your new place for all your stuff. Self-storage lets you keep things without cluttering up your home.

1. You are Renovating Your Home

When it comes to home improvements, larger projects sometimes require clearing out a room of your house — or sometimes moving into a temporary apartment and leaving the entire home to the construction crew.  In these cases, you’ll definitely need a storage unit.
