When the weather gets nicer here in Phoenix, everyone looks forward to spending some time outside. Arizona has many beautiful hiking, biking or running trails. One local area to our Bell Road facility is Lookout Mountain Preserve. It is located at 15800 N 16th ST, Phoenix, AZ 85022, just past Greenway Parkway on 16th street.
Parking at Lookout Mountain Preserve
There are two areas you can park in when you arrive to the preserve. However, there is no restroom area in the parking lot. So, make sure you hit the facilities at a nearby convenience store or restaurant on your way. While there, make sure to stock up on water as you do not want to get dehydrated even on our nicest days. There is a water fountain in the parking area for refills.
Many hikers and bikers enjoy this trail for the beautiful views; some would say you get a 360 degree view of the surrounding area of North Phoenix. A warning for all who plan to hike this mountain is to please watch out for the rocks, as there are lots of them on the trail.
There are many different levels of hiking trails on this preserve from easy to expert, but it is reasonably easy for the average hiker. The hike to the peak takes anywhere from 60 minutes to 90 minutes and while steep in some areas is considered to be a moderate hike. If you take the trail to the peak it is only a 1 mile round trip. The trail around the mountain perimeter is 2.2 miles. If biking is more your style, you can also take this trail. Remember to watch out for rocks if you are riding your bike on this trail!
One last thing to mention for anyone looking to hike or bike the Lookout Mountain Preserve is to watch out for wildlife. Normally you will only see birds, jack rabbits or maybe even a ground squirrel – but there is a chance you can see coyotes or other wild life. Be aware of your surroundings and stay safe!
