Katy Offers Small Town Life with Big-City Convenience
Katy is a city in the greater Houston metropolitan area’s northwest corner, at the nexus of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties. It’s a desirable place to live in Texas with affordable houses, highly rated schools and a friendly small-town ambiance. Although it has grown over the years, Katy still charms visitors with a historic town square and distinct local culture.
At one time, Katy had a picturesque “Wild West” setting with spacious prairies and herds of buffalo. It was the hunting grounds of the Karankawa Indians, a Native American group whose ancestral homelands are located along the state’s Gulf Coast. Formally settled in the 1890s as a railroad stop, Katy got its name from the famed K-T Railroad, which traveled between Texas, Kansas and Missouri. Local legend says the name also pays respect to a popular saloon keeper named Katy Mares.
With the introduction of the railroad, Katy grew rapidly. It was decimated in the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, which was the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. However, Katy’s locals rebuilt stronger and the city emerged as a prosperous oil and trade town. It remains a hub for businesses, including BP America, Conoco Philipps, Igloo, Mustang Engineering and Shell Oil North America.
Major landmarks in Katy include the Legacy Stadium — a 12,000-seat multipurpose venue — the Houston Community College Campus and the Katy Mills Mall. Amazon opened a distribution center in 2017 and there is reportedly more development on the horizon.

Things to Do Near Katy, Texas
When exploring Katy, one of the first things that stands out is the vast amount of green space. Katy is known for its extensive park system, replete with shady picnic spots and sparkling ponds. Many locals participate in the sports leagues that compete at the parks, including soccer, football, baseball, tennis and swimming teams. Dog owners will especially appreciate the Katy Bark Park, which includes acres of grass for playing fetch, a wading pool and doggie showers. With warm summers and mild winters, those in Katy spend time outside year-round.
Learn all about Katy history (and kick butt at Texas trivia) with a visit to the city’s museums. At the Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum, you can examine vintage farming equipment, including a variety of classic tractors, as well as artifacts and photos dating from Katy’s early years. Next, visit the Katy Heritage Park to explore beautifully preserved 100-year-old homes. There is also the Katy Railroad Park, with an authentic train caboose on display.
Once you’ve assumed the responsibilities of Katy’s next official historian, you might be in the mood to relax, eat and perhaps window shop. The Katy Mills Mall can fulfill all those desires, but if you’re seeking a more one-of-a-kind experience, head to Old Katy (north of Highway 90). There, you’ll discover a cluster of quirky antique shops and mom-and-pop restaurants. La Centerra, in nearby Cinco Ranch, is a higher-end option if you feel like splurging.
Cool off during Katy’s sometimes-sweltering summer months at Typhoon Texas, a premier waterpark that’s less than 10 minutes from our facility. This destination offers fun for the whole family, including a selection of adrenaline-fueled water slides, wave pool, lazy river and splash pads for your tiniest family members.
