Escondido Among Top Cities for Raising Kids, Doing Business in San Diego County

Founded in 1888, Escondido is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County. Over the past century, it has built a reputation around a pleasant year-round climate and a wealth of opportunity. The revitalized downtown area features numerous eateries and family-owned businesses, supporting a strong local economy and culture.

Escondido is typically considered a Mediterranean climate, with warm summers, cool winters and light rainfall. Natural vegetation includes chaparral, oak woodlands and grasslands — and you can enjoy these distinct ecosystems at the Daley Ranch Preserve, just north of town. Escondido Creek bisects the city, originating at Lake Wohlford Dam and emptying into the San Elijo Lagoon. A concrete channel prevents flooding and includes a meandering, streamside bike path.

Historically, Escondido was a prominent grape producer for Southern California’s early wine industry. Later, farmers added citrus, olives and walnuts, and in the 1960s, avocados. Despite the city’s agricultural past, many of the former fields are now residential neighborhoods, providing a place to live for the region’s growing population.

In the modern era, Escondido’s top employers include the Palomar Medical Center, which is the only designated trauma center in northern San Diego County. Opening in 2012, it employs more than 2,600. Another prominent employer is the Escondido Union School District, serving more than 17,000 elementary and middle school students.

I-15 and Highway 78 provide major commuter corridors for Escondido. Additionally, you may travel via railway, as the Sprinter light rail line connects Escondido to nearby Oceanside. It is also a stop along Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner route.

Things to Do in Escondido, CA

In the North County region, which includes Escondido, as well as communities such as San Marcos, Ramona and Poway, you’ll find ample outdoor recreation, noteworthy museums, annual community events and plenty more to entertain the whole family.

Start your day in Escondido’s bustling downtown, which boasts a collection of diverse restaurants ranging from sushi and pizza to pastries and tacos — truly, a food lover’s paradise. Beyond the selection of mouthwatering eateries is the California Center for the Arts, an impressive campus that includes a 1,500-seat concert hall, a 400-seat theater, a contemporary art museum and several dance and art studios. It’s the heart of Escondido’s cultural scene, offering more than 52 free community events, such as the Día de los Muertos and Winter Wonderland Festivals.

Art fans should also explore Escondido’s premier sculpture garden, titled Queen Califia’s Magical Circle by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Located within Kit Carson Park, the sculpture garden includes nine large-scale, brightly colored creatures, including winding serpents and a mythical five-legged eagle. Native American, Pre-Columbian and Mexican imagery, as well as Saint Phalle’s personal mythology, all inspired the work of art.

Minutes from downtown is the Escondido World Marketplace, a sprawling open-air market that has attracted shoppers for more than four decades. Expect to find an array of both new and vintage wares, intriguing snack bars and restaurants, live music and more. It’s a destination for one-of-a-kind souvenirs or gift shopping you shouldn’t skip.

Visitors from across the state and globe come to Escondido for its proximity to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Here, you can find wild and endangered animals in free-range enclosures. The park features African and Asian Savannahs, a tiger exhibit, a jungle and a condor habitat. Winning several awards for its educational and conservation efforts, the Safari Park was among the most successful condor recovery centers and home to one of the last remaining northern white rhinoceros in the world.

The convenient location and access, plus a month to month contract, make this facility a very good value. The rental prices are competitive, and service is excellent, including a call received from John, to alert me to our storage unit being improperly locked.
