With the holiday season upon us, things get a little more hectic. Making sure to get everything on everyone’s lists, worrying about who is coming to Christmas dinner, trying to get all the presents wrapped, making sure you send out the holiday cards, and the dreaded what to do with the kids during their Christmas break from school. This year, don’t let them get stuck in front of the TV or the tablet. Help them be creative using some of those leftover wrapping supplies and a few cardboard boxes for a few Christmas time projects.

Here are 5 super cool and easy Christmas projects to do with your kids using cardboard boxes.

#1 – Decorate a Gingerbread Man

Things you will need:

  • Large size cardboard box
  • Bottle of glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Christmas ribbons
  • Christmas bows
  • Large buttons (3)
  • Brown twine
  • Christmas wrapping paper
  • Tape
  • Different colored markers
  • Various colors of construction paper
  • Scissors (With Parent Supervision)

Using a large cardboard box, cut the four long sides apart and the flaps off to give you the pieces you need for your gingerbread man. Now cut out a gingerbread man design on one of the long sides of the cardboard. This is your template for others if needed. Put 2 eyes on the face and the 3 large buttons in a line going down the stomach using the glue. Then decorate it to liking using the supplies you have! Does your gingerbread man need shoes made from wrapping paper? Or, how about a ribbon bow tie? Whatever you can think of, do it!

#2 – Make a Cardboard Box Snowman

Things you will need:

  • Extra-large size cardboard box
  • Bottle of glue
  • Medium size cardboard box
  • Christmas ribbons
  • Small size cardboard box
  • Christmas scarf
  • Brown twine
  • White wrapping paper
  • Tape
  • Different colored markers
  • Various colors of construction paper
  • Scissors (With Parent Supervision)

Tape all three boxes closed. Wrap them all with the white wrapping paper so that none of the brown box color is showing. Stack the three boxes, extra-large on the bottom, medium in the middle, and small on the top. Cut out some circular pieces from black construction paper to be the coal for the eyes and mouth; putting larger circles on each box to represent the buttons on the stomach of the snowman. Make sure to glue them where they need to be. Wrap the scarf around the neck of your snowman. Cut out a carrot nose out of orange construction paper and glue it on the face. Use the construction paper to make a top hat for the snowman and place it on the top of your snowman.

Now all you need is to make a pipe out of brown construction paper. There you have it, a full size snowman!

#3 – Make a Cardboard Box Christmas Tree

Things you will need:

  • Large size cardboard box
  • Bottle of glue
  • Flat Christmas ornaments
  • Christmas ribbons
  • Christmas bows
  • Small strand of Christmas Lights
  • Brown twine
  • Christmas wrapping paper
  • Tape
  • Gold and silver colored markers
  • Various colors of construction paper
  • Scissors (With Parent Supervision)

Take the large cardboard box and cut it down on one of the corners to open the box and give you the most space for your tree. Take a pencil and draw out the design you want your tree to look like. Cut out the tree, but do not throw away the excess pieces. Cut those excess pieces and glue them on the folds of the tree, giving it stability. Now glue on and cover the tree with green construction paper.

Next, start decorating, using the flat Christmas ornaments, the lights, ribbon, bows, and cut out pieces using the construction paper and markers. Do not wrap the lights around the tree completely, simply start at the top and run the lights from side to side, taping the sides of the tree only. All you need now is the star for the top. Once that is done, stand your tree up and put it on the wall, securing it with a piece of paint-safe tape or adhesive.

#4 – Make a Cardboard Santa Sleigh

Things you will need:

  • Wardrobe size cardboard box
  • Hot glue gun (With Parent Supervision)
  • White paint or markers
  • Christmas ribbons
  • Gold and silver colored markers
  • Bottle of glue
  • Various colors of construction paper
  • Scissors (With Parent Supervision)
  • Kitchen rolling pin
  • Silver or gold Christmas bow

Take the wardrobe box and cut it down on all of the corners to give you four sides of the box, giving you two sides a little taller than the other two. The two taller pieces will be the sides of the sleigh. Take a pencil and draw the sleigh design on one of the taller pieces, this will be the template for the other side so both sides of the sleigh match up. Once the design is done, start cutting out the pieces of the sleigh. Use the first side to trace on to the other taller piece of cardboard and then cut those pieces out as well. This gives you the two sides of your sleigh with the same design.

Now, take one of the shorter pieces of cardboard and start to roll it up around the rolling pin. Using the hot glue gun, glue the rolled up piece to one of the sides of the sleigh. Follow the back to bottom of the sleigh. This will create the inside of the sleigh. Cut off the excess cardboard once you get to the front of the sleigh. Then glue the other side of the sleigh on to the rolled piece, now giving you the frame of your sleigh. Now color the sleigh with the paint or markers. Once dried, attach the ribbons and bow, or use the silver and gold markers to decorate the outside of the sleigh. All you need now is reindeer.

#5 – Decorate a Gingerbread House

Things you will need:

  • Large size cardboard box
  • Bottle of glue
  • Medium size cardboard box
  • Christmas ribbons
  • Christmas bows
  • Candy Canes
  • Brown twine
  • Christmas wrapping paper
  • Tape
  • Different colored markers
  • Various colors of construction paper
  • Scissors (With Parent Supervision)

Tape the large box closed on both sides. Do the same to the medium box. Take the closed medium box and cut it in half from the bottom of one side to the top of the other, giving you a triangle shape which will be your roof. Put this triangle shape on the top of the closed large box and tape into place giving you the frame of your gingerbread house.

Use the sheets of construction paper to make the frames of the door and windows for the house, don’t forget to do this to all four sides of the box. Then decorate with lights made out of the construction paper. Put the candy canes on each side where the door is. Use white construction paper to represent the snow on the roof of the house. Use the markers to draw bricks on the house. Decorate your gingerbread house how you like!
