SeaWorld San Diego was founded in 1964 and at that time had 45 employees along with a few dolphins, some sea lions, and two seawater aquariums. It is built on a 22 acre site in the Mission Bay area of San Diego.
SeaWorld is home to around 13,000 marine animals including killer whales (orcas), dolphins, walruses, penguins, beluga whales, polar bears, otters and sea lions. The animals are cared for by veterinarians and are fed a healthy diet with regular exercise and play times. Most of the animals were either rescued or born in captivity. This makes them unfit for returning to their natural habitat. The goal is to help them lead comfortable lives, while focusing on further education and developing awareness.
Presently the property hosts marine animal habitats, funfair rides, shows, play areas, events, and marine life experiences. There are some variations in the schedule depending on the time of the year. Popular shows include One Ocean, Dolphin Days and Killer Whales Up Close. There are also special shows put on during holiday seasons. Popular rides include Bayside Skyride, The Manta, Journey to Atlantis and Dolphin Point.
SeaWorld offers guests a great opportunity to get up and personal with many of the marine species that are on show. It’s focus on education, conservatism and fun make a visit a fun and enlightening day out.
