Picturesque Cardiff Delivers Work-Life Balance Near the Beach
Cardiff-by-the-Sea (often called simply Cardiff) is a seaside community in Encinitas, California. Encinitas, which also includes Olivenhain and Leucadia, borders Carlsbad and is a 30-minute drive to San Diego. This in-demand area is revered for stunning ocean views and pristine beaches. It attracts vacationers during the summer months but is also a top place to live and work in San Diego County. Despite growth in recent years, Encinitas still retains a laid-back, small-town feel.
Considered one of the premier surfing destinations in the world, Cardiff has a rich and storied surfing culture. The Magic Carpet Ride, a 16-foot-tall bronze surfer, greets visitors to the San Elijo State Beach. It has earned the nickname the Cardiff Kook for poor surfing form and is regularly dressed up in various costumes, including a Santa Claus outfit, a Lucha libre mask or a pumpkin head.
Local, family-owned shops, restaurants and cafes dot downtown Encinitas — a true haven for small business. Also downtown is the Scripps Memorial Hospital, known for several notable special programs, including physical rehabilitation services and accredited stroke care.
Three school districts — the Cardiff School District, the Encinitas Union School District and the San Dieguito Union High School District — serve Encinitas and nearby communities. Students may continue their education at the city’s college, including the California Institute for Human Science, the Mira Costa College or St. Katherine College.
Life in Encinitas is equally relaxing and entertaining, with a side of unparalleled natural scenery. We can make it even better with our convenient storage options.

Things to Do in Cardiff
Cardiff and the surrounding areas are made for leisurely days on the beach, strolling around the charming downtown or exploring the region’s best attractions. Start at Cardiff Reef, a broad-flat rock table extending a quarter-mile out to sea. During high-tide, it’s a beloved destination for surfers, whom you’ll likely see skimming the waves. Low-tide is also a treat, revealing numerous tide pools crowded with marine life. Cardiff Reef is on the southern side of the San Elijo Lagoon, a massive ecological reserve and nature center. One of San Diego County’s largest wetlands and a prominent habitat for migratory birds, the lagoon is popular among birders, runners and hikers. The Annie’s Canyon Trail is a great workout, traversing several ecosystems including salt marshes, riparian scrub and mixed chaparral.
Out-of-towners often stay at one of many pleasant vacation rentals, but the Cardiff By the Sea Lodge is a memorable retreat fit for special occasions or an enchanting getaway. Each room is decorated with its own unique theme and provides panoramic views of the ocean. For more lodging options, the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in nearby Carlsbad offers comfortably stylish accommodations and eight pools.
Family-friendly destinations in the region include Legoland, a theme park with rides, seasonal events and the Sea Life® Aquarium, a collection of colorful tropical fish. Miniland USA is a 1:20-scale model of major American destinations, including Grand Central Station in New York City, the Las Vegas Strip and Hollywood Boulevard, built with more than 20 million LEGO bricks.
People of all ages also love the San Diego Botanical Garden in Encinitas, which includes several sections such as a butterfly garden, a tropical rainforest and a bamboo grove. The California Gardenscapes section includes plants from each of the state’s seven distinct ecological zones, ranging from wildflower meadows to coastal dunes and woodlands.
Hungry? No problem. There are many restaurants minutes from our facility, including Cicciotti’s Trattoria Italiana & Seafood, a Southern California classic suited to a family dinner or a romantic evening. Another option is the VG Donut and Bakery, found across the highway, for freshly baked goods.
