Surfing3Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a beach community in Encinitas north of San Diego. The population of the area is close to 12,000. Locals refer to it as Cardiff and it is popular with beachcombers and has a busy oceanfront campground. It is also renowned as a surfing resort specifically at Swami’s and Cardiff Reef. Cardiff is also home to the Cardiff Kook which is a popular surfer statue.

Surfing at Swami’s

Swami’s or Swami’s Reef is a famous surfing spot in Cardiff. It is named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda as his Self-Realization Fellowship ashram is close to the area. The name was originally used only by locals but was eventually made official.

Surfing2Swami’s is a major surfing spot and has some good swells during the winter months. This is because of the right point break – along with associated reef and beach breaks. Swamis can get busy during favorable weather and surfers includes all levels up to professional. It can be a competitive scene. Bodysurfers and boogie boards are not welcome.

Cardiff Reef Surfing

Surfing1Cardiff Reef is also known to locals as simply The Reef and is a popular surfing spot for beginners up to professional level. Surfing at The Reef got popular during the 1950s and 60s and is now one of the more popular surfing spots in the San Diego area. The reason being the smooth and consistent wave shape caused by a flat rock reef which extends 50 yards from shore. This can be visible at low tide.
