Tempe in the wintertime is a wonderful and beautiful place to live. It sparkles and twinkles at night with the excitement of Christmas looming just around the corner. There are so many things to see and do this time of year. It is hard to choose which to see and when! So, that’s where I come in! I am Erik P – your local self-storage professional here to help highlight some of the many amazing holiday attractions Tempe has to offer.
Saturday, December 14th is the annual Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade! This is a fun event and one that my family and I have gone to many years now. There are so many floats that pass leisurely by that are lit up beautifully and look incredible on the town lake with the city scape as a backdrop. There are vendors for food and beverage, shopping, live entertainment and even Santa stops by for a visit!
Drive Thru Light Show
World of Illumination – This is a tradition of ours that we never miss! It is open now all the way to January 5th starting at 6 pm every day at Tempe Diablo Stadium. There are millions of lights dazzling and dancing to music in the dark with over 16 million shades of color! There is a huge 500 foot tunnel to drive through and fun things to do at the end. Put the kids in the car with some snacks and it makes for a wonderful time with great memories. The tickets are sold by the vehicle and a little birdie told me there might be some great coupons on Groupon!
If you feel venturing outside of the Tempe town limits, there is an exquisite light show at the 3rd annual Lights of the World Lantern Festival held at the Arizona State Fairgrounds from now to the 12th of January. There over 10 million colorful lights with over 65 displays and artisans with handmade gift to buy along with free performances to see! There is so much to see and do here and it is a very family friendly event.
Nightmare Before Christmas
Finally, on a slightly smaller scale – my favorite thing to do is drive around and see all the beautiful lights and displays that my fellow Tempeans creatively decorate their houses with. There is even a full Disney’s Nightmare before Christmas house here in town, and they put on a grandiose display! They have handmade and hand painted sets and props and it is really quite a thrill to see! There is no charge to go, but they do ask for a toy or diaper donation that they bring to help the Sojourner Center. They also have snow on the weekends – how fun!
