Las Vegas is a popular travel destination at every time of year, but in December, the bright lights of the Strip meet the festive lights of Christmas to create a unique experience for travelers of all ages.
If you’re planning a December visit to Las Vegas, you might be wondering what activities, shows, and events are happening. Here are some suggestions to fill your time when you’re not in the casinos.
Run with Santa
One of Las Vegas’ most popular annual events is the Great Santa Run, a five-kilometer race that raises money for a local charity,
Opportunity Village, which assists people with disabilities and their families. The tradition is for all participants to dress as Santa Claus. If a 5K is too strenuous for you, you can opt for the one-mile version instead. More information about this year’s race, which will happen on December 2nd, can be found here.
Attend a Christmas Show at The Smith Center
Las Vegas is just as famous for its entertainment as it is for its gambling. The Smith Center is a popular event venue with several December shows that provide holiday fun. They include A Classic Holiday, a festive concert for the whole family; A Well-Strung Christmas, featuring the popular string quartet Well-Strung; and performances of holiday favorite The Nutcracker. You can find additional information and buy tickets here.
Shop at the LINQ Promenade
If you want to accomplish some holiday shopping while you’re in Las Vegas, consider a trip to the LINQ Promenade. It’s an array of unique stores that includes both national chains and unique stand-alone shops that offer something for everybody on your list. The Promenade has several excellent restaurants, along with a monorail, a roller coaster, and a bowling alley. Plus, their holiday decorations are sure to put you in a festive frame of mind. Go Ice Skating
Ice skating in Las Vegas? It sounds ridiculous given the city’s reputation for intense desert heat, but that hasn’t stopped the Cosmopolitan from opening an ice rink for the holiday season. In addition to a quality rink, there are snow showers every half hour and a festive menu featuring hot cocoa and s’mores. There are fire pits to warm your hands, too! You can learn all about it here.
Attend a Rodeo
One of the best things about visiting Las Vegas is that you can experience many different things without leaving the city. A good example is the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which comes to Las Vegas every December. It’s held at the Thomas and Mack Center at UNLV and it lasts a week and a half. Some of the featured events include bareback riding, roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. You can find more information here.
Take in the Beauty of the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
If you want to take in some unique holiday decorations and learn a little bit about the plants that are indigenous to the Nevada desert, then you may want to schedule some time to visit the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. In December, the conservatory goes all out to decorate for the holidays, installing botanical sculptures that include polar bears made of carnations. It’s a great place to take a break from shopping and feast your eyes on some unique and surprising holiday decorations. You can learn more here.
