Many people have a lifetime amount of photos hidden away in their homes.  Often these are hard to find with no details of the content of individual photos. This video will get you on the right track with tips and hints about photograph storage:

How to Organize Your Photos – video transcription

Hi, welcome to Simple Life Together. I’m Vanessa Hayes. Today I’m going to share with you a few tips on how you can organize your photos.

Now, when it comes to organizing your photos, you can organize them like you would any other area of your home. You’re going to want to first sort your items, your photos; you’re going to want to edit them; and then you’re going to want to organize them.

So when it comes to sorting, the first step, I recommend instead of trying to get everything sorted in chronological order, I recommend just sorting them into different categories like maybe by person, by event, by activity. I just think that’s a little bit easier for you, to kind of sort your items as opposed to trying to make sure that they’re all in the right, exact order.

So once you’ve sorted them, the next step is to edit them. I highly recommend tossing any duplicates. There’s no need to keep that extra clutter unless you’re saving them for somebody else, and that’s okay. But otherwise, go ahead and get rid of the duplicates. I also recommend tossing that’s soiled, and ripped or torn, um, or that’s unflattering – and let’s face it, we’ve all had unflattering pictures taken of us, so let’s just go ahead and get rid of the evidence, okay?

Now, the only exception to this is if they’re old photos, old family photos in particular that are hard to replace or duplicate. Then I would recommending protecting them and putting them in an archival photo box.

Okay, so now that we’ve sorted our photos and we’ve edited the ones we don’t need, it’s time to organize them – and when it comes to organizing your photos, there’s all types of different options and different types of products that you can use. So I’m just going to highlight a couple that I use in my home that might be helpful for you.

So, the first thing you can do, obviously, is to use a photo album, and this one here is just a small one. They come in different shapes and sizes, of course, and um, this one here documents my time that I spent in Germany and my travels that I did in Europe. So when I talk about sorting your photos into categories, this is a way to kind of capture a special time in your life. And so that’s what this photo album is for.

You can also scrapbook if you’re into scrapbooking, that’s an excellent way to capture memories. This photo album here is one of my daughter’s from her first year. And what I like about this, it was made by Creative Memories and it has these removable sheets, so where you can do your scrapbooking, but you can also put photos in there as well. And you can kind of move these different sheets around to kind of, you know, make it to your liking. So, that’s kind of a neat, versatile book. So scrapbooking is an excellent way to capture your photos and your memories.

Now, when it comes to digital photos – and I’m sure you have tons of digital photos, I know I do – well, the problem with that is that a lot of times it just gets stuck on a computer and you never actually get to cherish them and show them off. Well, one way that you can do that is to create a photo book like the one you see here. This is of my husband’s parents at their sixtieth wedding anniversary, um, it was just kind of a special moment, a special time, and so we were able to capture that in just a simple little photo book. What’s nice about these is that you can just pick your favorite photos and then put them in a very sleek, thin photo album as opposed to one of these, when you put the hard photos in there, um, they’re just so bulky and big, but this is nice and slim and it still maintains a good amount of photos in it. So that’s a nice option for you to capture your memories.

Now, for the oversize photos that you have there’s a couple different options for you. Um, this is just a binder, but I found these really cool sheet protectors for photos, um, I found these at the Container Store, and what’s nice about these is it holds these different types of odd-sized photos like the eight-by-tens, four-by-sixes, and even five-by-sevens like you’ll see here. So that’s kind of neat for you to be able to create your own binder of photos for those kind of awkward-sized photos in your collection. So here, my husband and I have been able to collect some of our military photos in here. So that’s an option for you.

The other thing you can do is maybe use one of these lay-flat document holders. And this is nice, again, I found this at the Container Store. What’s nice about this is it would hold an eight-by-ten photo in here, but it also holds some of those nice certificates and things that we get from different places. And so for, for me, for example, I’ve been able to, to store my awards and decorations in here, other photos that I’ve gotten from my military service. So it’s just another option for you, to kind of protect some of those keepsake items, and what’s nice about this is that it comes in different sizes. So you see that’s the eight-by-ten, and then it has an even bigger size for some of those really large group photos, like this is my husband when he was a Training Instructor in the Air Force. And then they even have a bigger one for some of those bigger certificates like retirement certificates, maybe diplomas, so there’s different sizes to keep some of those big, big pictures.

Okay, so what about all the rest? What if you don’t want to put some of these pictures in photo albums or these document protectors, um, but you still want to keep the photos? Well, your good old-fashioned shoe box works just fine, like you see here. I started this, I think actually right out of college I started creating, um, photo boxes. Um, but what I recommend that you do is somehow sort them. And what I did here is I just used some cardstock and put a label on here to kind of differentiate the different types of photos that I have in here, the different events in my life. So that’s what you can do.

Now, I used to do that for a long time until I found this beautiful little organizer. And it’s this little briefcase that actually has twelve little individual photo boxes inside, which I love, because then I’m able to kind of sort my photos, put them into these different little boxes, and I was even able to label them so it’s just a better way to organize them. And then what I like is that they’re protected in this little, hard box, and then they’re in this bigger one and it’s all together in one box and you can just carry it away like a little briefcase. So just another really cool option for you to store some of those loose photos. And I found this on Amazon, but you can also find it at the Container Store and probably some other stores around, but Amazon for sure and the Container Store.

So there you have it. Easy way to sort your photos. You want to sort them, edit them, and then organize them. But I want to share this other tip with you. My husband and I were actually able to interview the lead expert in personal photo organizing, and we did an awesome interview with her.
