The new year is underway, and in the first quarter of 2019, residents of Scripps Ranch can expect a groundbreaking ceremony for a new retail center that’s set to open in the fall of 2020.
The Watermark shopping center will be located at the southeast corner of Scripps Poway Parkway and Scripps Highland Drive. Sudberry Properties is the developer, and the plan is to include a variety of retail and dining options with other amenities.
While construction has not yet begun on Watermark, the developer has already released information about some of the tenants. As of now, the plan is for the shopping center to include a Whole Foods Market, a variety of restaurants and retail stores, and a movie theater. It’s expected that the restaurants will include chef-driven gourmet dining, and that the shopping will feature a mix of local and national retailers.
In addition to the shops and dining establishments, there are plans for a 140-room Element Hotel by Marriott – something that will be welcome since hotel rooms in San Diego are often difficult to find.
Parking for the new shopping center will be in structures to maximize the available space. The primary reason for that decision, according to Carlton Sudberry – the CEO of Sudberry Development – is to leave space for multiple courtyards, paseos, and plazas throughout the shopping center.
There are also plans for a large green space for community and holiday events and a series of outdoor movies.
More Traffic for Local Businesses
Residents of Scripps Ranch are understandably concerned about an increase in traffic in their neighborhood. However, business owners in the surrounding area say they are happy about the planned development.
Yannis Pihas owns a family restaurant in Scripps Ranch. He says, “More hotels and businesses coming around will develop the business in our community. It’s a good thing.”
All told, Watermark will boast 275,000 square feet of retail space and 420,000 square feet of office space.
Sketches for the shopping center show attractive buildings surrounded by palm trees and other vegetation. The architecture is clean and modern, and it looks like it will fight right in with other shopping centers in the greater San Diego area.
Opening in Fall of 2020
Construction on the Watermark is still in the early stages. The site is being graded and prepared for the groundbreaking ceremony, which will happen in the first quarter of this year.
Plans are to unveil the new shopping center in the Autumn of 2020. No official opening date has been announced yet, but we anticipate that there will be special events and celebrations when the day arrives.
Expect to see a roll-out of announcements as retailers, restaurateurs, and businesses sign leases for the new rental space.
The new Watermark shopping center in Scripps Ranch will likely bring more business – and more tourists – to the neighborhood. The next year and a half should be busy for the developers, and for the businesses who will be occupying the space when it opens. Storage West is excited to see this new addition to our community.
