Before you accept a salary for your new job, you must take the time to find out what the cost of living is in the city you’re moving to, and – most importantly – how it compares to the cost of living where you are now.
Sometimes, companies expect employees to make lateral moves at the same salary. However, if you’re moving from a place with a low cost of living to one with a high cost of living, your salary should be increased accordingly.

Second, find out if there is any financial assistance available to help you defray your moving expenses. If your current employer is relocating you, then they will probably provide you with assistance and may even pay for your entire move.

Learn the Area
Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to visit the geographical area where you’ll be moving before you actually make the transition. If you can, try to get to know the area at least a little.
One of the most essential things you need to know is which neighborhoods and districts are the most suitable for you and your family. Some of the things to consider include:
- The quality of neighborhood schools
- The crime rate
- The average housing cost
- Nearby amenities
The more information you have going into your move, the less likely it is that you’ll end up in the wrong area.
Research Licensing and Insurance Requirements
If you are moving to a new state, then you will have to take care of routine housekeeping items such as:
- Registering your car
- Getting an emissions test
- Getting a new license
- Getting car insurance
- Registering to vote
Many states impose deadlines for some of these things, meaning that you may have to act rather quickly to register your car or risk facing a penalty.
Plan Your Move
Even if your employer doesn’t offer job relocation assistance, the company may still be able to provide you with recommendations for a moving service, a real estate agent, and an insurance agent.
Being armed with a few recommendations – and making some preparatory phone calls before you hit the road – can save you a lot of time and aggravation as you settle into your new home.
