Finding a great place to raise a family isn’t always an easy thing to do. There are a lot of factors that go into making a city family-friendly. Recently, WalletHub.com ranked 254 cities in California to determine which ones provided the best environment for raising a family. Murrieta came in at #59, putting it in the top quarter.

To residents of Murrieta, it’s no surprise that their city performed so well. It’s one of the reasons that they call Murrieta home.

What Makes a City Family-Friendly?

When visiting a city for the first time, you might have a gut feeling about whether it’s someplace you’d like to live. Ranking a city for family friendliness, though, means identifying benchmarks and measuring them.

For its report on family-friendly cities, WalletHub looked at 21 metrics in four categories. The categories were:

  •   Family Life & Fun
  •   Education, Health & Safety
  •   Affordability
  •   Socioeconomic environment

Some of the metrics that fell under Family Life & Fun were Parks per Capita and Number of Attractions. The Education, Health & Safety category included measurements of Pediatricians per Capita and Violent Crime.

In the Affordability category, Housing Affordability and General Affordability were measured. And finally, in the Socioeconomic Environment Category, some of the key metrics were the Unemployment Rate, Divorce Rate, and Poverty Rate.

Murrieta by the Numbers

Of all the cities in Riverside County, Murrieta ranked third on the list. The only two cities ranked higher were Eastvale at #16, and Temecula at #21.

One of the things that made Murrieta stand out was its low rate of violent crime. In a recent ranking of the safest cities in California, Murrieta came in at #2. Parents can feel safe raising their children in Murrieta because this small city experiences a tiny percentage of violent crime when compared to other municipalities in California.

Murrieta also has good schools. In its 2018 Best Schools List, US News awarded a silver badge to Vista Murrieta High School. Badges are a measurement of how well a school prepares its students for the challenges of college.

When it comes to public safety, Murrieta also shines. Murrieta Fire & Rescue received Accredited Agency status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI.) The accreditation has been earned by only 18 California agencies as of 2018.

Family Fun in Murrieta

Murrieta is a small city, and regularly hosts events that are designed for family fun and entertainment. Annual events include parades honoring military veterans and a Donuts with Santa party to kick off the holiday season.

Murrieta sponsors summer camps for kids. Specialized camps include horseback riding, cooking, science, and robotics. They also have camp activities for kids who have special needs.

Murrieta is located within an easy driving distance of family attractions like the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Disneyland. The mild climate makes it a good place to enjoy outdoor activities while soaking up the Southern California sunshine.
