Storage West has North Las Vegas storage available. For long-time residents and new arrivals, there’s never been a better time to live in NLV.

Online mega-retailer Amazon has plans to launch an 850,000 square foot fulfillment center in North Las Vegas. The new facility is in addition to Amazon’s existing facility in the area, which is off Interstate 15.

Construction on the new fulfillment center is already underway. The massive facility will employ approximately 1,300 people, offering a significant opportunity to residents of North Las Vegas and nearby locations.

Why North Las Vegas?

When asked why Amazon is opening another facility in North Las Vegas, the company cited increasing demand in the area. That’s likely true, but NLV Mayor John Lee gives Nevada and North Las Vegas some of the credit as well.

Nevada has worked hard to create a business-friendly climate, and that has certainly played a role in Amazon’s decision. Mayor Lee also worked to ease municipal red tape to make the new location an attractive option for the retailer. Some of the accommodations made to encourage businesses include a streamlined building permit process and fast inspections of completed facilities.

New Hires and Robots

Construction is still underway, but Amazon recently gave KTNV an inside look at the fulfillment center and some of its technology.

As you might expect, there’s a network of seemingly-endless conveyor belts that will carry goods across the facility to the area where they’ll be packed and shipped. While there are plans to hire more than a thousand workers, those employees will work side-by-side with some impressive technology: Amazon’s fulfillment robots.

The floor of the facility is marked with stickers, which the robots will use to guide themselves. They’ll be responsible for sorting products as they arrive. Then, human workers will transfer items to the conveyor belts and pack them so they’re ready for delivery.

Who Can Work at Amazon?

If you’ve ordered from Amazon, you know that they provide fast ordering and delivery anywhere in the United States. When asked what they’re looking for in employees, a representative told KTNV, “We are looking for enthusiastic, customer-obsessed associates.”

To apply for a job at Amazon, you must be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

One thing that sets Amazon apart is that they pay a $15 minimum wage. All new hires will be eligible for health benefits and a 401k immediately. They’ll also have access to the company’s 20-week parental leave and their career choice program, which pays college tuition for “courses relevant to a career at Amazon.”

It’s expected that there’ll be plenty of interest in the jobs. As of this writing, no official opening date for the facility has been announced. However, Amazon made its hiring announcement at the end of April 2019, and the company is clearly expecting the facility to open soon.
